I am a Cambridge graduate maths teacher, who spent 25 years as a practising solicitor before training as a secondary maths teacher at Warwick University (PGCE with QTS). I spent 5+ years teaching in schools in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire before taking early retirement and setting up my own tutoring practice. I believe in teaching for deep understanding, and want my students to see and understand mathematics as an integrated whole, each part of which supports and reinforces the other parts, rather than as a disconnected series of rules and procedures that just have to be learned and applied without reference to any of the others. I teach across the whole KS3 and KS4 curriculum; but my greatest strength lies in GCSE preparation. The A level maths teacher at the school in Wellingborough where I used to teach said "I can always tell when a student did their GCSE with Mr Burrows, because they have a mathematical curiosity, and a desire to understand WHY the maths works, as well as HOW it works, which no other students possess." I always travel to my students and teach them in their own homes, and am entirely comfortable if parents wish to sit in for some or all of any session to observe my teaching. I am happy to teach after school, or at weekends, or to work with home-schoolers during normal school hours. My standard rate is £30 per hour; and for small group tuition I have a sliding scale of charges which increases the overall hourly rate, but reduces the amount which each learner pays. I normally teach in Bedford and the immediately surrounding villages. I am content to travel further afield, but a higher rate will have to be agreed to reflect the additional mileage and travel time. I do not insist upon signing up to any minimum commitment or require up-front payment. You can book me for a single session, or as many sessions as you wish. I ask for payment on the day, by cash, cheque or direct bank transfer. If you need to cancel a pre-booked session for any reason, I do not charge a cancellation fee.
