TutorTime Research · Data snapshot: 8 October 2026 · Next update: November 2026

TutorTime is a free listing board where tutors set their own hourly rate and keep all of it. We take no commission. So the price on a TutorTime listing is the tutor's own asking rate, not a platform price with fees built in. This report gathers those asking rates into medians by country, city and subject. It covers every priced public listing on TutorTime on 8 October 2026.

Read this first: these are advertised asking rates from a sample of TutorTime listings. They are not what families actually paid, and they are not a national market average. See Methodology and limitations.

Key findings

  • The typical TutorTime tutor asks US$21.87 an hour. That's the median of 162 priced listings in 24 countries. The middle half of tutors ask between US$13 and US$40.
  • Where a tutor lives matters most, with a five-fold gap. The median rate is US$50/hr in the United States and US$9.50/hr in the Philippines.
  • Tutors who list an international curriculum (IGCSE, A Levels, IB or AP) ask about 60% more than tutors in the same country who don't. The gap shows up in all six markets where we could compare.
  • Regional example, Taiwan: the median is NT$800/hr (about US$25), and NT$900 in Taipei, roughly 4× Taiwan's 2026 hourly minimum wage of NT$196.
  • Experience matters less than you'd expect. Newer tutors (0–2 years) price about 24% below their country's median. From year three onward the gap mostly closes. Online-only tutors and tutors who teach in person price about the same once you allow for country.

Most TutorTime tutors work across borders: two in three teach only online. A student in London, New York or Taipei can book a tutor in Lagos or Manila. That's one reason the country gaps below matter to families and tutors alike.

Bar chart of the median advertised hourly rate in eight countries, in US$: the United States is highest at US$50 and the Philippines lowest at US$9.50. The median across all 162 priced TutorTime listings is US$21.87 an hour.

Rates by country

We report the eight countries with enough listings (at least 14 each). For Taiwan, the US and the UK, the headline figure is in local currency and uses only listings priced in that currency. TutorTime currently lets tutors price only in NT$, US$ or £. Tutors in Nigeria, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and South Africa therefore list in US$ or £, and we show their figures in US$.

Rates by subject within each country

We only publish a subject in a country when at least 5 tutors list it with a price. We show the middle-half range only when at least 10 do. A tutor who teaches several subjects counts once in each, so the counts don't add up to the country total.

What moves the price: curriculum, experience and subject

Prices differ so much between countries that comparing raw medians across the whole sample mostly measures where tutors live. To isolate other factors, we compared each tutor with the median of their own country, across the eight markets above (140 listings), and averaged by group. "+25%" means a group typically asks 25% more than the median tutor in the same country. See the methodology for details.

Curriculum: the clearest premium

GroupListingsPrice vs. own-country median
Lists IGCSE, A Levels, IB or AP56+25%
Lists no curriculum84−23%

Tutors who list an international curriculum ask about 60% more than tutors in the same country who don't. The pattern held in every market with at least 5 tutors in each group:

Experience: new tutors price low, then it levels off

Bar chart of how advertised rates change with teaching experience, compared with each tutor's own-country median: tutors with 0–2 years ask 24% below it, and tutors with 11+ years ask 6% above it.
Years teachingListingsPrice vs. own-country median
0–2 years32−24%
3–5 years23−6%
6–10 years38−4%
11+ years47+6%

Without adjusting for country, rates appear to double with experience (US$15 for 0–2 years vs. US$30 for 11+). Most of that is because more experienced tutors on TutorTime tend to be in higher-priced countries. Within a country, the main step is out of the first two years.

Subject premiums, adjusted for country

These are subjects listed by at least 10 tutors across the eight markets.

SubjectListingsPrice vs. own-country median

ACT11+4%
Mathematics64+1%
Chemistry25+1%
English78−9%
Biology27−11%
Physics32−15%
Mandarin Chinese11−28%

Test prep (IELTS, SAT) and Business Studies carry a premium. The sciences sit slightly below the median. Most Mandarin tutors are in Taiwan, so that figure mainly reflects the Taiwan pattern above.

Online vs. in person: no premium once country is accounted for

Raw medians suggest in-person tutors charge more (US$24.99 vs. US$19.85 for online-only). But in-person tutors are concentrated in Taiwan and the US. Compared with tutors in their own country, both groups price the same: −6% for online-only (93 listings) and −6% for tutors who offer in-person lessons (47).

How to use this report

For parents and students

  1. Use the local median as your anchor, and the middle half as the normal range. Across TutorTime, US$13–40/hr covers half of all tutors. In the US it's US$25–55, in the UK £20–40, and in Taiwan NT$600–960.
  2. Expect to pay more for exam and curriculum specialists. IGCSE, A Levels, IB, AP, IELTS and SAT tutors typically ask more. Ask exactly which exam board or syllabus they cover.
  3. Online widens your choice. Two-thirds of TutorTime tutors teach online, and in-person tutors don't charge more than online tutors in the same country. If you're open to online lessons, filter by your time zone and budget.
  4. Ask what the hourly rate includes: lesson length, preparation, materials and cancellation terms. On TutorTime you pay the tutor directly and we take no cut, so the listed rate is the tutor's own.
  5. Browse by subject and city: English in Taiwan · Maths in Taiwan · Mandarin in Taiwan · English in Taipei · Maths in the UK · English in the US · Maths in Nigeria · all online tutors

For tutors

  1. Price against your own market, not the global figure. Check the country and subject tables above.
  2. New tutors start about a quarter below the local median. After a couple of years, most tutors price at or above it. If you have experience, show it on your listing.
  3. List the curricula you actually teach. Tutors who list IGCSE, A Levels, IB or AP ask about 60% more than those who don't, in every market we could compare.
  4. Listing on TutorTime is free and we take no commission, so the rate you set is the rate you keep. List yourself free.

Methodology and limitations

  • Source. All public tutor listings shown on tutortime.study on 8 October 2026 (01:52 UTC): 163 listings, of which 162 had a valid hourly price. Company-managed listings are included. No other trimming or weighting is applied.
  • What we measure. Each tutor's self-reported, advertised hourly asking rate in the currency they chose. TutorTime charges no commission or service fee, so the figures contain no platform fees. They are not prices paid, negotiated quotes or invoices, and they may vary with lesson length, level or package.
  • A sample, not a market average. TutorTime tutors choose to list with us. Results describe TutorTime listings only and shouldn't be read as national averages. TutorTime launched publicly in August 2026, so the sample is young and small.
  • Currencies. Tutors can price in NT$, US$ or £. Local-currency figures for Taiwan, the US and the UK use only listings priced in that currency. For other markets, all listings are converted to US$. Conversions use the U.S. Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rates for 2 October 2026 (the latest available at the snapshot): NT$32.01 per US$ and US$1.3234 per £.
  • Statistics and privacy rules. We publish aggregates only. Every figure rests on at least 5 priced listings, and we show middle-half ranges (25th–75th percentile, linear interpolation, the same as Excel's QUARTILE.INC) only when a group has at least 10. We never publish minimums, maximums, names or listing text, so no individual tutor can be identified. Multi-subject tutors count in each subject group, so group counts don't sum.
  • Country-adjusted comparisons. For curriculum, experience, subject and format, each tutor's US$ price is divided by the median US$ price of their own country (eight markets, 140 listings). Each group's figure is the geometric mean of those ratios, expressed as a percentage above or below 1.
  • Self-reported fields. Location, subjects, curricula and teaching start year are entered by tutors and not verified by TutorTime. "Experience" is the snapshot year minus the year the tutor says they started teaching.
  • Subject excluded: Public Speaking. 37 of 162 priced listings (23%) tick "Public Speaking", but only 1 of those 37 mentions public speaking, speech, debate or presentations in their profile text. It isn't a pre-selected default on our listing form. We think many tutors tick it as a secondary skill rather than a subject they teach as a service. We've left it out of subject tables until we can verify it.
  • Thin samples left out. Subject–country groups with fewer than 5 priced listings aren't shown (e.g. Chemistry, IELTS and SAT in Taiwan; SAT and ACT in the US; Chemistry, Physics and Biology in the UK). Countries with fewer than 14 listings aren't reported individually but are included in global figures.
  • Updates. This page will be refreshed monthly from live listings using the same method. Figures can change as tutors join, leave or edit their listings. The aggregate data is in the downloadable CSV.

FAQ

How much does a private tutor cost per hour in 2026? It depends mostly on the country. Across 162 priced TutorTime listings in 24 countries, the median advertised rate was US$21.87/hr, and the middle half of tutors asked US$13–40. Medians ranged from US$9.50 in the Philippines to US$50 in the United States (snapshot 8 Oct 2026).

How much do tutors charge in the UK and the US? On TutorTime the median UK tutor asks £30/hr (middle half £20–40). The median US tutor asks US$50/hr (middle half US$25–55). These are fee-free asking rates from TutorTime listings, not national averages.

How much does a tutor cost in Taiwan? The median TutorTime tutor in Taiwan advertises NT$800 an hour, and the middle half ask NT$600–960. In Taipei the median is NT$900. Mandarin tutors are lowest at NT$650. ESL is highest at NT$850.

Do online tutors charge less than in-person tutors? Not once you compare tutors within the same country. Raw medians look lower for online-only tutors only because many of them are based in lower-cost countries.

Are these the prices families actually pay? No. They are tutors' advertised hourly asking rates on TutorTime. Actual prices can differ with lesson length, packages and negotiation. Always confirm the rate with the tutor.
